PARAMARIBO – Op donderdag 15 december heeft een delegatie bestaande uit vertegenwoordigers van de International Labour Organization (ILO) Decent Work Team and Office for the Caribbean, de Brazil School for Labour Inspection, en het Ministerie van Arbeid, Werkgelegenheid en Jeugdzaken (AW&J), een oriëntatie bezoek gebracht aan Rosebel Gold Mines N.V. (RGM). Dit bezoek is georganiseerd in verband met een 3-daagse missie in Suriname met als doel het versterken van de Arbeidsinspectie. Als onderdeel van de missie, is er een trainingsworkshop georganiseerd in het kader van het 2021-project “Consolidatie van de voortgang van het regionale initiatief Latijns-Amerika en het Caribisch gebied vrij van kinderarbeid”. De groep heeft vervolgens een bezoek gebracht aan RGM hetgeen de Brazil School for Labour Inspection in staat stelde op locatie aanbevelingen te doen aan de Arbeidsinspectie van Suriname.
Jason Menso, Fungerend Hoofd Internationale Zaken op het Ministerie van AW&J, geeft aan erg ingenomen te zijn met de RGM-operatie: “De groep vond het een geweldige ervaring, omdat ze niet wisten dat er in Suriname zo een grote mijnoperatie als RGM aanwezig was. Dit was voor ons een mooie gelegenheid om een operatie te laten zien van een groot bedrijf in Suriname”. Menso stelde verder dat RGM een goed voorbeeld is van een bedrijf dat conformeert aan de Surinaamse wetgeving. “Rosebel is over het algemeen een van de most compliant werkgevers in Suriname wanneer het gaat om de arbeidswetgeving. They do their due diligence, en ze zijn een voorbeeld van best practices, maar ook als het aankomt op RGM’s Corporate Social Responsibility, het creëren van werkgelegenheid voor de lokale gemeenschappen en kansen voor ondernemers in de omgeving danwel als het gaat om ondersteuning bieden m.b.t. opleidingen en certificeringen doet RGM een goede job,” aldus Menso…[+]

PARAMARIBO – Omstanders hebben geholpen om de brand aan een auto aan de Nieuwe Charlesburgweg te blussen. Het is niet bekend hoe de brand is ontstaan. De krant verneemt dat de bestuurder van de auto zich aan de Nieuwe Charlesburgweg bevond. Op een gegeven moment vloog de wagen in brand. De automobilist riep om hulp en kreeg die van omstanders. Ex-vriend aangehouden voor bedreigen vriendin
PARAMARIBO – Leden van het Regio Bijstandsteam Paramaribo hebben de 37-jarige Luciano V donderdagavond in de kraag gevat ter zake diefstal middels geweld en bedreiging. Hij is in een auto klemgereden te Latour. De man heeft zijn ex-vriendin bedreigd te zullen doden. Verder heeft hij haar beroofd van enkele spullen en is daarna gevlucht. Thousands of unedited government JFK assassination files released
The White House has ordered the release of thousands of documents on the murder of US President John F Kennedy in full for the first time. With the publication of some 13,173 files online, the White House said more than 97% of records in the collection were now publicly available. No huge revelations are expected from the papers, but historians hope to learn more about the assassination. Kennedy was shot during a visit to Dallas, Texas, on 22 November 1963. A 1992 law required the government to release all documents on the assassination by October 2017. On Thursday, President Joe Biden issued an executive order authorising the latest disclosure. But he said some files would be kept under wraps until June 2023 to protect against possible “identifiable harm”. Twitter threatened with EU sanctions over journalists’ ban
The EU has threatened Twitter owner Elon Musk with sanctions after several journalists covering the company had their accounts abruptly suspended. Reporters for the New York Times, CNN and the Washington Post were among those locked out of their accounts. EU commissioner Vera Jourova warned that the EU’s Digital Services Act requires the respect of media freedom. “Elon Musk should be aware of that. There are red lines. And sanctions, soon,” she tweeted. She said: “News about arbitrary suspension of journalists on Twitter is worrying. “[The] EU’s Digital Services Act requires respect of media freedom and fundamental rights. This is reinforced under our Media Freedom Act.” Mr Musk tweeted that accounts which he claimed engaged in doxxing – a term to describe to the release of private information online about individuals – receive a temporary seven-day suspension. “Same doxxing rules apply to ‘journalists’ as to everyone else,” he tweeted. Wieambilla: Australia police killers posted video during shootout
A couple behind a suspected ambush in rural Australia, in which two police offers were killed, appear to have posted a video during the attacks, where they admitted to the killings. Queensland Police said they were aware of the tape but did not confirm whether it showed Gareth and Stacey Train. The couple, along with Gareth’s brother Nathaniel, were killed by police after shooting two officers and a neighbour. Police are looking into the trio’s links to conspiracy theories. Officials said the suspects used “many weapons”, but are yet to reveal what kind – or any motive for the attack. But Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Thursday said it was a “vicious and deadly ambush”.
