Father of man accused of raping and slaying Queens jogger Karina Vetrano doesn’t believe his son is a killer

Neither the DNA evidence nor a confession was enough to convince Richard Lewis that his son was behind one of the most notorious crimes in recent city history.

Even as cops paraded Chanel Lewis, 20, past a wall of reporters outside the NYPD’s 107th Precinct stationhouse in Queens, Lewis could not believe his son had anything to do with the rape and murder of a jogger in Howard Beach that had baffled cops for months.

Karina Vetrano’s father found her body in a patch of tall weeds near her Howard Beach home after she went out for a run and disappeared on Aug. 2.

Cops said the 30-year-old woman was punched in the face and strangled after putting up a vicious fight that left the killer’s DNA under her fingernails.(nydailynews)…[+]

White House considering removing sanctions against Russia in effort to combine forces in ISIS fight, Pence says

The White House will decide in “the months ahead” whether to remove sanctions against Russia in exchange for coordinating efforts against ISIS in the Middle East, Vice President Mike Pence said Sunday.

“If we have opportunities to work together, I think the President is looking for an opportunity to begin that relationship anew,” Pence said on ABC’s “This Week.” “But, make no mistake about it, those decisions will await action. And they’ll be very dependent on how the Russians respond in the days ahead.”

When asked directly about whether sanctions against Russia — with whom Trump has been accused of cultivating a cozy relationship — would remain in place “as long as Russia is violating the ceasefire in Ukraine,” Pence replied that it “was a question that will be answered in the months ahead.”(nydailynews)…[+]

Next trial for Oregon occupiers might be bungled by key witness’ alleged Burning Man wrongdoing

The next trial for the self-styled militia that took over a federal building in Oregon might be bungled — by Burning Man.

A federal agent who oversaw operations during the weeks-long Oregon standoff, and was expected to be a key witness in the upcoming trial, has been accused of abusing his position to get tickets and security for the Burning Man desert festival in 2015.

A report on the alleged back-dealing dropped just six days before jury selection is set to start for the trial in a Las Vegas federal courtroom. The first trial for the occupation, in an Oregon court, ended last year with the defendants getting acquitted on all major charges and a juror blaming federal prosecutors for a faulty case.(nydailynews)…[+]
