Snow, freezing rain make for messy morning commute across parts of Northeast, Midwest

CHICAGO — Snow, freezing rain and rain made for a messy Monday morning commute as a winter storm pushed further east. The National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories for parts of the Great Lakes and the Northeast. As of Sunday night, the storm had dumped more than a half-foot on several states in the Midwest and Great Lakes regions, causing dangerous travel conditions. Parts of the Northeast, including New York City, received a wintry mix late Sunday and early Monday, slowing travel for morning commuters. It’s a “slap of reality” after a mild November, National Weather Service meteorologist Dave Schmidt in La Crosse, Wisconsin, said.(nydailynews.com)…[+]

One shot dead, 7 wounded in outbreaks of violence across the Bronx and Brooklyn

Violence across the Bronx and Brooklyn left a man shot dead, and seven other people wounded in four separate bloody scenes Sunday night.

At about 7 p.m., a gunman shot two men, killing one, after an argument on the corner of E. 175th St. and Weeks Ave. in Mt. Hope. — the same intersection where a man and woman were killed in a double murder in July. One man, 41, was shot once in the head and died on the scene.

The other, 25, is in critical condition at St. Barnabas Hospital later Sunday night, after the shooter blasted him in the jaw, right eye and back, police sources said. Cops were looking for a Hispanic man in his 30s, wearing a black jacket, who ran east on Weeks, police sources said. “This block is known for violence. When you’re raised in an environment of violence, you adapt to it,” said a friend of one of the victims, who identified himself as Michael Garcia, 31. Garcia described his friend as a “neighborhood person” who worked at a Bronx Foot Locker store to raise money for his three children.(nydailynews.com)…[+]

Christian non-profit evicts Queens apartment residents to convert building into homeless shelter

A faith-based Queens nonprofit is trying to boot low-income renters into the street in the midst of the holiday season — in the hopes of converting their building into a homeless shelter, residents told the Daily News.

The New York School of Urban Ministries in Astoria wants tenants out of the 46th St. building as soon as possible and has been using underhanded methods to speed up the process, residents say. Pastor Peter DeArruda, the executive vice president of the ministry, sent notices out last month informing tenants they must vacate the building by Dec. 31. “I will never understand how a Christian group can dump longstanding and faithful residents in the middle of the winter and during the holidays,” said 39-year-old actress Amy Burgmaier, who has lived at the address on and off for two years.(nydailynews.com)…[+]

Developers with projects along de Blasio’s planned Brooklyn-Queens streetcar route throw cash at mayor’s nonprofit campaign

All aboard the mayor’s money train, a planned streetcar from South Brooklyn to northern Queens that appears to have triggered developers with projects along the route to donate big money to de Blasio’s favorite causes.

First came the push to get de Blasio to back the $2.5 billion taxpayer-supported streetcar running from Sunset Park, Brooklyn, to Astoria, Queens. Supporters call it the Brooklyn Queens Connector, or BQX.

Then came the checks from six developers, totaling $245,000, to support de Blasio’s favorite causes. The developers sent the checks to the mayor’s nonprofit Campaign for One New York. Then came the mayor’s announcement, in his State of the City address in February, that the city would go full steam ahead with the 16-mile trolley line.(nydailynews.com)…[+]

Former Florida lawmaker Allen West shares meme that Trump will ‘exterminate Muslims’ with Secretary of Defense pick

Right-wing pundit Allen West stated that President-elect Donald Trump’s tapped retired Marine Gen. James (Mad Dog) Mattis as Secretary of Defense to “exterminate Muslims,” according to a Facebook post.

In bold white letters, the hatemongering message blasted President Obama for firing Mattis “to please the Muslims” and that Trump will use his hawkish cabinet pick, Mattis, to commit mass genocide. The post, first shared just after midnight Saturday, spent hours accumulating scores of shares, likes and comments. It has since been deleted and Michele Hickford, a staffer for the one-time Florida lawmaker, took the blame for the Islamophobic meme.

“Last night I posted a meme without Col. West’s knowledge or consent which was inappropriate and crossed the line,” wrote Hickford, a writer and communications strategist for West. “I take full responsibility for this. It was wrong. I was wrong. It does not reflect Col. West’s beliefs.”(nydailynews.com)…[+]

Alabama inmate coughs, heaves 13 minutes into execution

ATMORE, Ala. — A man who killed an Alabama convenience store clerk more than two decades ago was put to death Thursday night, an execution that required two consciousness tests as the inmate heaved and coughed 13 minutes into the lethal injection.

Ronald Bert Smith Jr., 45, was pronounced dead at 11:05 p.m., about 30 minutes after the procedure began at the state prison in southwest Alabama. Smith was convicted of capital murder in the Nov. 8, 1994, fatal shooting of Huntsville store clerk Casey Wilson. A jury voted 7-5 to recommend a sentence of life imprisonment, but a judge overrode that recommendation and sentenced Smith to death.

Smith heaved and coughed repeatedly, clenching his fists and raising his head at the beginning of the execution. A prison guard performed two consciousness checks before the final two lethal drugs were administered.(nydailynews.com)…[+]

President-elect Donald Trump spars with Indiana union boss over Carrier deal

President-elect Donald Trump blasted a challenge from United Steelworkers leader Chuck Jones, accusing the billionaire of “lying his a– off” about his prized Carrier deal to discourage job outsourcing to Mexico.

Trump, the self-proclaimed business tycoon, said the Indiana union boss “has done a terrible job representing workers.” “No wonder companies flee country,” Trump wrote in a spate of dueling tweets on Wednesday night.

Jones, who represents employees at the Indiana factory Trump championed throughout the campaign trail and during last week’s jobs deal, claims the future commander-in-chief staged “a dog and pony show” about the number of jobs he saved. The deal scored a $7 million state tax incentive that would last one decade for parent company United Technologies.(nydailynews.com)…[+]
