Alabama teen attacked, mother claims it’s a hate crime for son’s pro-police views

The mother of a hospitalized Alabama teen says her son was the victim of a hate crime — attacked because of his pro-police viewpoints. Brian Ogle, 17, a student at Sylacauga High School, was left in critical condition with a cracked skull, as well as trauma to the brain following the recent attack, which occurred Friday in a parking lot. Ogle was beaten by several individuals, police said. His mother Brandi Allen called the attack a hate crime in an interview with local station ABC 33/40. “I want to see them in jail, this most certainly is a race issue, it’s a hate crime.” Allen said.Ogle had been posting and sharing pro-police content on his Facebook page amid the ongoing national tensions about race and police. His mother believes this is what led to his attack.

While police have identified and interviewed persons of interest in the case, no motive has been released — and no charges have been filed.

Starting Monday, additional police will be patroling the city’s high school and middle school, Sylacauga County Police said in a statement.(nydailynews.com)…[+]

Pakistani man describes shooting his sister in ‘honor’ killing after she married a Christian

LAHORE, Pakistan — For two months, over the thunder of machines at the steel mill, the men taunted Mubeen Rajhu about his sister. Even now, they laugh at how easy it was to make him lose his temper. Some people had seen Tasleem in their Lahore slum with a Christian man. She was 18, a good Muslim girl, out in public with a man. Even though the man had converted to Islam out of love for her, this couldn’t be allowed.

“Some guys got to know that his sister was having a relationship,” says Ali Raza, a co-worker at the mill. “They would say: ‘Can’t you do anything? What is the matter with you? You are not a man.”’ Raza can barely contain a smile as he talks about the hours spent needling Rajhu.(nydailynews.com)…[+]

A 16-year-old Nebraska girl killed her prematurely born baby early Friday by throwing the infant out a second-floor window minutes after going into labor, authorities said.

Hurricane Matthew roars across the Caribbean on course for Jamaica, Haiti and Cuba

KINGSTON, Jamaica — One of the most powerful Atlantic hurricanes in recent history weakened a little on Saturday as it roared across the Caribbean on a course that still puts Jamaica, Haiti and Cuba in the path of potentially devastating winds and rain.

Matthew briefly reached the top hurricane classification, Category 5, and was the strongest Atlantic hurricane since Felix in 2007. The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said its winds had slipped to a still-devastating 155 mph (250 kph) and it was expected to reach the eastern part of Jamaica on Monday. Jamaicans began clearing out store shelves as they stocked up emergency supplies and Prime Minister Andrew Holness on Friday called an urgent meeting of Parliament to discuss preparations for the storm.(nydailynews.com)…[+]

Body of missing North Carolina teen Erica Parsons found five years after she disappeared

The body of a 13-year-old North Carolina girl who vanished in 2011 was found this week — two years after her adoptive parents were convicted of tax fraud related to the child’s disappearance. The skeletal remains found Tuesday in South Carolina were positively identified as Erica Parsons by the North Carolina Medical Examiner’s Office, officials said Thursday. It was adoptive father Sandy Parsons, who was also her uncle, who told investigators where to find Erica, the Charlotte Observer reported. “It’s been a long hard five years not knowing where she was,” aunt Teresa Goodman told WSOC.

Erica lived with Sandy and Casey Parsons in Rowan County from 2000 until her disappearance. She wasn’t reported missing until 2013. The couple claimed Erica went to live in Asheville with a woman they believed to be her biological grandmother, who never turned up. They repeatedly insisted this was the case, and even went on national TV with “Dr. Phil” McGraw in 2013. The episode was titled “Missing or Murdered: Where is 15-Year-Old Erica?”(nydailynews.com)…[+]

City investigating tragic death of 6-year-old Zymere Perkins

The mother of a battered 6-year-old Harlem boy told investigators she watched her hulking boyfriend beat her son with a wooden broomstick and hang him by his T-shirt from a hook on the bathroom door. Then she placed her dead son on a bed and rested and read the Bible.

The infuriating and sickening details of little Zymere Perkins’ final moments emerged as city investigators launched a probe Wednesday into his death — trying to determine whether a series of past child-care failures sealed his tragic fate.

The Department of Investigation demanded the documents in five previous ACS probes of abuse involving Zymere’s mom after Mayor de Blasio admitted the system he had set out to reform had failed. The child’s death Monday came two years after de Blasio vowed to reform the city’s Administration for Children’s Services and four months after a highly critical DOI assessment of the troubled agency.(nydailynews.com)…[+]
