BaiShanLin proposes settlement with GRA

It appears, for the time being, that controversial logging company, BaiShanLin Forest Development Inc. is seeking to iron out some of the kinks in its relationship with Guyana by seeking to settle its debt with the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) which has been accumulated through what financial experts deemed a wonton distribution of tax concessions.

BaiShanLin has been granted $1.8B in fiscal concessions over the years. BaiShanLin has persistently defaulted on the investment agreement it has signed with the Government to establish a wood processing plant at Linden. A promise to set up the wooed procession plant is what got BaiShanLin the chance to secure the concessions.(Kaieteurnews.com/photo: Kaieteurnews.com)…[+]

Education Ministry shuts Brickdam Secondary doors

As part of the Ministry of Education’s plan to address the situation at the beleaguered Brickdam Secondary School, the ministry has decided to issue letters of transfer to the effect that teachers and students report to different secondary institutions.

Tuesday, ministry officials held a meeting with the teachers at 13:00 hours when they informed them of the decision. Later in the day, the same officials held a meeting at Saint Stanislaus College with the parents where they were then notified.

A parent speaking with KAIETEUR NEWS expressed that the plan may eventually lead to the break-up of the institution.
