Drone flies briefly near Obama’s motorcade in Hawaii

U.S. –  No charges were filed against a Hawaii man after his drone flew near President Barack Obama’s motorcade in Hawaii on Monday. The drone was spotted hovering “car high” very briefly near the motorcade as it was driving by. Guinea declared free of Ebola virus

(CNN)The World Health Organization has declared Guinea to be free of Ebola.

It’s a milestone, as the Ebola outbreak that ravaged West Africa began in Guinea in December 2013 and spread to Liberia and Sierra Leone. From there, the outbreak traveled to seven other countries. Liberia and Sierra Leone were earlier declared Ebola-free. The declaration was made because 42 days have passed since the last person confirmed to have Ebola tested negative for the second time, a WHO statement said. China launches HD earth observation satellite

XICHANG-China on Tuesday launched its most sophisticated observation satellite, Gaofen-4, as part of the country’s high-definition (HD) earth observation project.

Gaofen-4 was launched from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in the southwestern province of Sichuan at 00:04 a.m. aboard a Long March-3B carrier rocket. It was the 222th flight of the Long March rocket series, according to the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense (SASTIND). Gaofen-4 is China’s first geosynchronous orbit HD optical imaging satellite and the world’s most sophisticated HD geosynchronous orbit remote sensing satellite, according to Xu Dazhe, head of SASTIND and China National Space Administration.

The successful launch of Gaofen-4 was the 19th space mission in this year. It will be used for disaster prevention and relief, surveillance of geological disasters and forest disasters, and meteorologic forecast, according to Tong Xudong, the chief designer of the Gaofen project with SASTIND.The Gaofen project aims to launch seven high-definition observation satellites before 2020.Gaofen-1, the first satellite of the project, was launched in April 2013.(Xinhua)…[+]

 

Six South Korean cosmetic giants debut

Six leading South Korean cosmetic companies have made their debut in India with an array of cosmetic and wellness products, entering into a joint venture with Indian firms to eventually make them in India, an official statement said. The six Korean companies entering the Indian market are PLK International, Coson Company Limited, Outin Futures Corporation, BCL Cosmetics Company Limited, Kell Cosmetics Company Limited, and Esthetic House Company. The companies signed a joint venture agreement with an Indian firm for marketing their products first and will eventually make them in India under the ‘Make in India’ campaign, the statement said on Monday. Shot former murder accused succumbs

Former murder accused, Keron Herbert, who was shot Saturday night while closing his stall at the Vendors’ Arcade, has succumbed to his injuries.  The 29-year-old father of four died in the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC)’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU)Sunday , less than a day after he was shot four times by a lone gunman. Herbert, of Lot 31 Morocut Square, East La Penitence had sustained injuries to the throat, buttocks, stomach and one of his thighs. He had also suffered severe damage to his spine and one of his kidneys and doctors had informed his relatives that if had had survived, he would not have been able to walk again. Man kills self after torturing teen lover

A jealous young man took his life on Boxing Day, hours after terrorizing his teenage girlfriend and escaping from the Grove Police Station.

Lorenzo James, 21, who resided at Duncan Street and at Lot 218, Grove, East Bank Demerara, reportedly succumbed in a house in South Ruimveldt after ingesting a poisonous substance. Earlier in the night, James, who had shared an on and off relationship with his girlfriend who is 16 years old, had gone to her home while her mother was at work. Disney (DIS) said Sunday that its blockbuster broke the $1 billion mark around the world faster than any other film in history. The sci-fi adventure movie reached the milestone 12 days after its global release. That is one day earlier than the previous record holder Universal’s “Jurassic World,” which was released earlier this year. Owl attacks Louisiana officer, causes car crash

(CNN)One unsuspecting Louisiana police officer was in for a hoot on Christmas Eve.

Covington Police officer Lance Benjamin was riding alone Thursday with his windows down, patrolling the quiet streets of a Louisiana subdivision, when he felt something hard hit the side of his face. At first Benjamin thought he was struck by a football, he told CNN affiliate WVUE. “And then I felt some scratching on the back of my head and some pecking,” he said. An owl had flown into the driver’s side window and started attacking the officer with its wings, talons and beak.

 During the mayhem, the officer temporarily lost control of his patrol car and drove it into a ditch, according to the Covington Police Department. “I tried to keep control of my car, went into a ditch, avoided some trees. Finally was able to stop the car put it in park get out. And there he was, just chilling out in the car,” he said. Benjamin waited about 45 minutes for the owl to finally fly out of the car and into the darkness. Pakistani, Indian PMs vow to carry forward dialogue process

ISLAMABAD, Dec. 25 (Xinhua) — The Pakistani and Indian prime ministers met in the Pakistani city of Lahore on Friday and “expressed their desire to carry forward the dialogue process for larger good of peoples of the two countries,” a Pakistani foreign ministry spokesman said.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid an over-two-hour unscheduled visit to Pakistan that was seen very important as relationship warmed up in recent weeks.

“The two prime ministers agreed to continue and enhance contacts and work together to establish good neighborly relations,” the Pakistani foreign ministry said at the conclusion of one-and-a-half hour meeting at the residence of Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

The Indian prime minister had a stopover in Pakistan on his way back to New Delhi from a visit to Afghanistan where he inaugurated the India-funded parliament building. It was Modi’s first visit to Pakistan and the first by any Indian prime minister in 12 years. “Prime Minister of Pakistan welcomed the initiative of the Prime Minister of India to visit Lahore,” Pakistani foreign ministry spokesman Qazi Khalilullah said.

Modi’s visit was seen very important ahead of the resumption of the official dialogue between the two countries next month after a break of nearly eight year. President Xi stresses importance of military newspaper

BEIJING — Chinese President Xi Jinping has highlighted the role of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Daily, and called on the paper to play a leading role in strengthening the military and innovate in journalistic practice.

The PLA Daily must adhere to the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and serve the PLA, which is also under the CPC leadership, said Xi, who is also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC).

While visiting the paper’s headquarters on Friday, Xi said the daily should uphold Party principles and “unswervingly” embrace the CPC leadership.

The president personally posted an update on the paper’s Weibo account, wishing members of the armed forces a happy New Year and encouraging them to making new contributions to the Chinese dream and the dream of a stronger military. Founded on Jan. 1, 1956, the paper is celebrating its 60th anniversary.

Xi urged the newspaper to strictly follow the leadership of CPC Central Committee, safeguard the authority of the CPC Central Committee and the CMC, and spread their voice.
