Security forces find “go-fast” boat hidden in jungle

A joint operation conducted this week in the Region One, Waini Point area, and involving ranks of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU), has resulted in the discovery of a fiberglass fast boat concealed in the jungle terrain.  The fast boat was inspected by the ranks, and it was outfitted with a powerful inboard engine.  GDF said that the craft is suspected of being used to transport illegal items and conduct other illicit activities.  Ranks of the respective agencies are continuing their investigations…[+]

S. African, Chinese researchers launch book on China-Africa ties

PRETORIA, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) — South African and Chinese experts on Thursday launched a book which analyses the relationship between China and Africa in great details. Titled FOCAC 2015: A new beginning of China-Africa Relations, the book was written by Funeka Yazini April, a researcher from Human Sciences Research Council, Prof. Garth Shelton, a lecturer at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg and Prof. Li Anshan, a professor at the School of International Studies at Peking University.

The book details China’s engagement in Africa in the political, economic and people-to-people relations. Speaking at the launch, Pro. Shelton explained the importance of China in the shaping of modern politics.  “Africa cannot afford to ignore China. China is important to South Africa, Africa and the world. China is the most important ally in transforming global political system. It is a long time friend of Africa from the liberation struggle. It is an important partner of Africa in development and has a special relationship with the continent,” Garth said.

Shelton praised China’s stance of allowing Africans to have African solutions to African problems, saying,”In the next 10 years China is expected to double its economic growth. That would be the next wave of China Wave and that would change the world. Africa has to take advantage of that,”Shelton added. He said China is committed to bringing peace and stability in Africa for economic development. He also said every relationship has difficulties and this will also happen to China and Africa. Fire breaks out in market in Afghan capital, causing damage

KABUL, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) — Several shops turned to ashes as a massive fire engulfed a market in a main business hub in central Kabul Saturday morning, police said.

“The fire started at around 10:00 a.m. local time in a plastic shoes market inside Kabul Mandawi, the main business center in the city, causing serious damages to the shops but no casualties took place by the incident,” a police officer told Xinhua near the site.

“First, a one-storey footwear and plastic shoes market caught fire but the fire has penetrated to the neighboring cosmetic wholesale market. Dozens of shops and storehouses were destroyed and turned to ashes. The damages could be millions of afghani,” a shop owner, Ahmad Fawad, told Xinhua. Fawad said that hundreds of shops around the area escaped the fire as the fire fighters had brought the situation under the control. The authorities have launched an investigation into the incident while shop owners said that the surprising incident was apparently caused by carelessness.(Xinhua)…[+]

GRA Board recommends demotion and transfer for former AG’s wife

The Guyana Revenue Authority after an assessment of the performance of Deputy Commissioner of Inland Revenue, Legal Services Division (LSD), Hissaun Yasin-Nandlall, has recommended that she be transferred to another operational support area. The conclusion is that there is need for improvement in her performance. A document seen by this publication regarding the justifications made for Nandlall’s transfer stated that she should continue in the position of Deputy Commissioner of the LSD, but at the lower level. Decomposed body of missing taxi driver found

The partially decomposed body of missing hire car driver Colin Clarke, was found in the vicinity of Uitvlugt, West Coast Demerara (WCD), Thursday. Clarke, popularly known as “Ole Boy” of Crane Housing Scheme, WCD, was last on Friday, in the area where he works. Both the 55-year-old man and a silver-grey Toyota Allion motor car, HC 4993, which he operated, disappeared. Charlie Sheen’s ex-fiancée sues, alleges assault, battery, failure to disclose HIV

Rice production up by seven percent, export by 10 percent

General Manager of Guyana Rice Development Board (GRDB), Nizam Hassan, yesterday reported a production growth of seven percent, and an export growth of 10 percent at the end of November. According to Hassan, rice production, up to the end of November was 681,517 metric tonnes. Hit-and-run’ on Sheriff Street…Driver turns self in

A man is currently in police custody assisting with the November 26, 2015 investigation into the ‘hit-and-run’ accident at Pike and Sheriff Streets, Georgetown. Dead as a result is 17-year-old Travis Bollers. This was yesterday confirmed by Commander of ‘A’ Division, Clifton Hicken, who informed this publication that both the driver and owner of the vehicle, accompanied by a lawyer, turned themselves into the police.  He also confirmed that police have located and taken possession of the vehicle involved in the accident, GHH 5201, a white Nissan pickup.
