Fishermen catch Corentyne pirates after robbery

Three pirates who attempted a daring attack on a group of fishermen at sea on Friday last, were on Tuesday remanded to jail by Magistrate Carlyn Artiga when they appeared before her at the Mibicuri Magistrate’s Court in Black Bush Polder on two charges of Robbery under Arms. Syrian President Assad makes surprise visit to Moscow for talks with Putin

SYRIA- Embattled Syrian president Bashar al-Assad has flown to Moscow for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is now his chief sponsor. The talks, held Tuesday night, centered on coordinating military action in Syria, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. Peskov said the talks concerned the fight against “terrorist extremist groups,” a phrase the Assad regime regularly uses to describe all elements of the disparate opposition.Syria has been embroiled in a brutal civil war for four and a half years. The Assad regime has lost control of broad swathes of the country to opponents that include moderate forces as well as the extremist group ISIS. Jordan instructs GRA’s Boss to go after tax evaders, smugglers

Baby killer’ confesses hours after surrendering

GUYANA- Marc Angoy, the prime suspect in the shooting death of a baby girl and the wounding of her 12-year-old aunt, has reportedly told police that he opened fire on the children after mistaking the older one for his reputed wife, whom he had intended to kill.Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum said that Angoy confessed only after hours of intense questioning, following his surrender at the Grove Police Station on the East Bank of Demerara. Blanhum said that detectives also swabbed the suspect’s hands for possible traces of gunpowder. The samples are to be turned over to the Forensic Laboratory. Providence man gets 57 years for murder over bicycle

Ravindra Pareemdass, 24, has been sentenced to 57 years in prison for murder. Pareemdass was found guilty by a mixed Jury at the Georgetown High Court.  The sentence was handed down by Justice Navindra Singh. Good Hope farmer found stabbed to death in bedroom

A mother worried about the whereabouts of her son got the shock of her life, when she entered her son’s Good Hope, East Coast Demerara home Monday and found him stabbed to death and stretched across his bed. Dead is 22 year old Shiraz “Amir” Ali, a cash crop farmer residing at Lot Two, Good Hope railway embankment, East Coast Demerara. Three brothers among six held for Dennis Street carjacking

GUYANA- Police have captured six persons-five men and a woman-in connection with the recent hijacking and shooting committed on 53-year-old, taxi driver, Colin Ageday of Golden Grove, East Bank Demerara (EBD). The suspects, three brothers-Michael and Seon Heywood of 52 A Field Sophia and Selwyn Heywood of Victory Valley Linden, along with James Bourne 19, of 589 B Field Sophia, and Winston DeHaarte of 596 D Field Sophia were captured yesterday after the police received information from a concerned citizen. Tresa Ramitt also of 596 B Field, Sophia is also being held for questioning in connection with the same incident. Police are still trying to locate another of the Heywood brothers, Shawn, also of 52 A Field Sophia. He is Ramitt’s common law husband and was fingered in the gang that shot the taxi driver to his back around 19:45 hrs on Thursday on Dennis Street, Sophia. Economic growth dips to lowest in decades

GUYANA- Guyana‘s economic downturn has been revised negatively for some time now by pundits and experts alike but for the first time in a number of years the country’s economic growth rate has been set at below one per cent. At least this is according to the latest revised figures. The Ministry of Finance released the figures for the first half of this year and according to the statistics revealed, “at the time of preparation of Budget 2015, preliminary estimates indicated half year growth rate of 0.9 percent.” According to the Finance Minister Winston Jordan, “with the passage of time and the benefit of actual first half performance in a number of sectors real GDP (Gross Domestic Product) recorded growth of 0.7 per cent in the first half of 2015.” (KAIETEUR NEWS/photo: stabroeknews.com)…[+]

Top al Qaeda leader Sanafi al-Nasr killed in U.S. airstrike, Pentagon says

SYRIA -The leader of an al Qaeda-linked group allegedly bent on attacking the West has been killed in an airstrike by the U.S.-led coalition in Syria, U.S. officials said Sunday. Sanafi al-Nasr, a Saudi citizen whose real name is Abdul Mohsen Adballah Ibrahim al Charekh, was the highest-ranking member of the Khorasan Group — a collection of veteran al Qaeda jihadis which had moved into Syria, the Pentagon said in a statement. Pradoville 2 ‘Nancy story’ is a diversion –says PPP

GUYANA-Some executives of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) say that they are tickled, almost to tears, by a recent report coming out of Government’s anti-corruption unit which is recommending criminal charges against former PPP Ministers who were involved in a Pradoville 2 deal. The report from the State Asset Recovery Unit said that prime land making up the Pradoville 2 scheme, was secretly sold to the former Ministers and known friends and associates of the previous regime.
