Police say recruitment centres filled to capacity

GUYANA-The Guyana Police Force has revealed that its training institutions in the three counties are almost filled to capacity, as the organization moves closer towards fulfilling a mandate to increase its establishment by 1,500.The announcement comes in response to a letter in yesterday’s edition of the Kaieteur News captioned: “GPF can probably learn from GDF in terms of attracting manpower” which speaks to recruitment by the Guyana Defence Force as a possible guide/lesson to the police.The Police were obviously offended by the missive, since it made the point that the Guyana Defence Force for some reason appears to be attracting a higher number of recruits.(Kaieteur news/“kaieteurnewsonline.com)…[+]

 

Murdered cash crop farme tests reveal gunpowder on husband’s hands

GUYANA-Police have revealed that tests conducted on the hands of the husband of slain cash crop farmer Pamela Kendall confirmed traces of gunpowder. With this discovery, the man, Deochand Sookchand, is now the prime suspect in the woman’s murder. Deaths in Austria, Mediterranean raise migration’s grim toll in Europe

The discovery of a number of dead migrants in the back of a truck in Austria, just a day after the Italian coast guard said 54 people lost their lives trying to cross the Mediterranean, has highlighted once again the scale of the migration crisis gripping Europe.The truck concerned was on the A4 highway, which links Budapest in Hungary to the Austrian capital, Vienna, a spokesman for the Austrian Interior Ministry told CNN on Thursday. Merkel to visit protest-hit refugee home

BERLIN — German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Wednesday will visit a refugee home which was hit by violent far-right protests, her spokesman said on Tuesday. The chancellor, according to spokesman Steffen Seibert, is expected to hold talks with refugees, volunteers and security staff in the eastern German town of Heidenau. Hundreds of far-right extremists staged violent protests at a refugee shelter in Heidenau last weekend. Dozens of police officers were reportedly injured in clashes when anti-migrant protesters threw stones, bottles and firecrackers at them. Businessman shot, robbed outside night club

GUYANA- After a night of clubbing with friends, a city businessman was shot and robbed by a masked bandit moments after stepping out of a Sheriff Street night club. According to reports, Ravindra Singh, 28, owner of R&R Car Rentals, was shot thrice in his right leg before being relieved of two gold chains and a bracelet in the wee hours Monday. It was just after the curfew time of 2:00am when Singh had parted ways with friends leaving them in Club Monaco where they had gone to enjoy a night of clubbing. Govt allocates Rs 200 cr (US$ 31.5 million) for online national agriculture market

INDIA- Narendra Modi Government has allocated Rs 200 crore (US$ 31.5 million) for three years to set up an online national agriculture market by integrating 585 wholesale markets across India — a move that would help farmers realise better prices. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs had approved a Central Sector Scheme for Promotion of National Agricultural Market through Agri-Tech Infrastructure Fund on July 2. “An amount of Rs 200 crore (US$ 31.5 million) has been earmarked for the scheme from 2015-16 to 2017-18,” an official statement said.
