DC Miranda “Millions saved through deployment of inmates”

SURINAME – The deputy director at the Offender Care Division at the Ministry of Justice and Police, Paulus Pinas,  is content with the work that the inmates are doing. He and District Commissioner  Jerry Miranda on Tuesday visited several locations in Paramaribo North to see what the inmates were doing or what they have done.  DC Miranda explained that ‘hiring’ inmates for various projects is much cheaper than hiring contractors. The inmates reportedly remove weeds from vacant plots and cemeteries but they also embellish bridges and repair roads. The inmates are currently busy at a abandoned sport facility in Geyersvlijt that has become overgrown with weeds. World Tuberculosis Day: “Slight increase of TB cases in Suriname”

SURINAME – The National Tuberculosis Program (NTP) registered 157 tuberculosis cases in 2014. There were reportedly 144 TB cases in 2013 which means that there has been a slight increase. The increase is the result of the improved TB tracking system. As countries marked World Tuberculosis Day on March 24, WHO is calling for “global solidarity and action” to support a new 20-year strategy, which aims to end the global tuberculosis epidemic. Woman jumps out of car with baby during robbery

SURINAME – A woman on Monday morning jumped out of a car with her 10-month-old baby during a robbery. The robber reportedly took her necklace. The woman was standing along the Felixweg in Santodorp with her baby when she asked a driver to give her ride to the Magentakanaalweg.
