Traffic accident leaves 1 dead

SURINAME – The passenger of a pick-up truck, Diminga Naarden (30), died in a traffic accident that took place at km 22 along the Oost-Westverbinding km 122 in the  Coronie District. Regional Police Chief  Harnarain Mohan confirmed that the traffic accident had claimed one life. The driver of the pick-up truck survived the accident while the passenger died at the scene.  Olton Pinas, spokesman of the Fire Department, told Times of Suriname that a grey pick-up truck ended up in a gutter in the Coronie District, leaving 1 person dead. “I had to lay flat on the roadside”

SURINAME – “I had to lay flat on the roadside,” said a man who was robbed at Uitvlugt on Saturday morning. The man indicated that he was robbed after he had collected money for his employer at a branch store of the company. The man who had collected SRD 6,300 was on his way back to the main office when two robbers on a motorcycle stopped in front of him and ordered him to get off his motorcycle. Bouterse:“We must not fight amongst ourselves over positions”

Woman throws boiling water on boyfriend

SURINAME – A young woman on Tuesday afternoon threw boiling water on her boyfriend. The incident took place along the Jasmijnstraat in Nieuwe Haven during a heated argument. Police Inspector Drohpatie Ramkhelewan from the Public Relations Office of the Police Force Suriname (KPS) confirmed the reports and indicated that the man suffered first degree and second degree burns. VHP asks police chief Mathoera to report for political duty

SURINAME – The VHP has reportedly asked police chief Hussainal-Mathoera to become one of its parliamentary candidates in the Wanica District. Mathoera has already accepted the offer and has indicated that she will ask her superiors to relieve her of her duties as chief of police. Two Malaysians injured in traffic accident

SURINAME –Two Malaysians on Tuesday were injured in a traffic accident that took place on the road to Atjoni in the Brokopondo District.  The Malaysians were sitting in a pick-up truck that was headed towards Atjoni. An terrain vehicle reportedly came right at them from the opposite direction. There was a head-on collision when the terrain vehicle swerved to the other side of the road in a bend. Nikos survey: “39% has been victim of crime”

SURINAME – The results of a  survey that was recently carried out by the  NGO Instituut voor Kaderontwikkeling en Onderzoek in Suriname (NIKOS) indicate that  39% of the people or their housemate or neighbor has fallen victim to some type of crime last year. The survey was carried out from February 25 until March 6. 745 people participated in the survey. 35% of them indicated that they had fallen victim to theft, burglary and  home invasion robbery while 4% mentioned another type of crime. 61% of the people indicated that they had not experienced any type of crime last year…[+]

Brazilian bees attack inmates

SURINAME – Brazilian bees recently attacked inmates who were busy cleaning a vacant lot in Paramaribo South-West.  Paulus Pinas, deputy director at the Offender Care Department of the Ministry of Justice and Police, confirmed the reports. Suriname to acquire Suralco on July 1

SURINAME – The Surinamese government and Alcoa have reached an agreement aimed at handing the  Suriname Aluminum Company (Suralco) over to Suriname on July 1, 2015. The planned ‘take-over’ of Suralco, would include mining, refining and Afobaka hydroelectric operations. Both parties also plan on ending the Brokopondo agreement. The take-over reportedly won’t cost the Surinamese government anything. This is what the presidential commission that consists of  Dilip Sardjoe, Marc Waaldijk and Gillmore Hoefdraad agreed with Alcoa on behalf of the Surinamese government.
