Chetak helicopters ready for missions

SURINAME – The National Army on Friday presented the three Chetak helicopters at the air force  base located at Zorg en Hoop. The three helicopters had been purchased through a credit line in 2009 by the previous administration but were delivered in January 2015. “Because of various aspects it took a long time before we could these choppers ours but now we are relieved,” said Defense Minister Lamuré Latour. Police units evict illegal miners from Dam 10 area

Police units from the Brokopondo Police Department on Thursday launched a large-scale eviction operation in the Dam 10 area with the assistance of the National Army, the Mobile Unit, the Regional Support Team (RBT), the Gold Sector Regulation Commission and Suralco.  Police Inspector Rieknath Kalloe, who led the police operation under the supervision of Chief Inspector Stanley Benschop confirmed that dozens of people were evicted from the area. Parliament wants 5 organizations to manage copyrights

Parliament on Thursday indicated that it wants no more than five organizations to be given permission to represent copyrights in Suriname. Two suspects arrested on assault charges

Two young men were arrested in the Saramacca District this week on assault charges. Reports indicate that one suspect is 15 years of age while the other one is 19. The two young men reportedly assaulted two men who sustained head, shoulder and chest injuries. The victims were given medical treatment after the assault.[+]

Four springs for Saramacca

On Thursday officials gave the starting signal for the drilling of four springs in the

Saramacca District.  Marlon Oosterling, head of the Water Supply Division of the Ministry of Natural Resources (NH), confirmed that the State Oil Company (Staatsolie) will do the drilling. After the springs have been ‘uncovered’ the Water Supply Division will construct the infrastructure for the water network. Suriname Spelling Bee being held for the 4th time

The Suriname Spelling Bee is being held for the fourth time this year. Regional competitions are currently being held independently in the districts  Paramaribo, Wanica and Nickerie. The finalists from the districts  Nickerie and  Wanica will be invited to the finale which will be held in Paramaribo. SURINAME – The  Stichting Nationale Bloedbank (National Blood Bank Foundation) of the Suriname Red Cross reportedly can’t keep up with the demand for blood.
