The Central Bank of Suriname (CBvS) creates an intervention facility for importers with the Southern Commercial Bank. Through this facility huge imports from the Republic of China no longer have to be paid in American dollars, CBvS states in a press release. Staatsolie invests additional $50 million in expansion of power plant
SURINAME – The State Oil Company (Staatsolie NV) and the government have invested $50 million in the expansion of the company’s power plant at Tout Lui Fout. Last week two Wärtsilä generators were imported. Each generator reportedly has a 17 Mega Watt capacity. The generators which will be up and running at the end of April or at the beginning of May were transported from the harbor to Staatsolie by water. Citizens check their particulars online
Reports indicate that a growing number of citizens who are eager to go to the polls on election day, May 25, are checking their particulars online. Last week about 2,000 voters had checked their particulars online at www.verkiezingen.sr and within a week this number jumped to 4,200. 3,000 residents at Sonny Point to receive tap water

President Bouterse announces second AKB raise
President Desi Bouterse who addressed the supporters of his party at a rally near the Revolution Square on Tuesday night announced that the general child allowance (AKB) will be raised from SRD 30 to SRD 50 at the end of March. Bouterse’s administration previously raised the general child allowance from SRD 3 to SRD 30 per child up to 4 kids max per family. KBS reports increase in grass fires
“The number of grass fires has increased in February,” Olton Pinas, spokesman of the Fire Department Suriname (KBS), told Times of Suriname. Statistics indicate that there were 24 grass fires in January while 50 have already been reported in February. Fire officials expressed their concern regarding this increase.
