Many applicants interested in election day job

Many people who are interested in working for the government on election day, May 25, showed up at the Paramaribo North East District Commissioner’s Office on Monday. Many people who wanted to fill in an application form stood in line outside the DC’s Office. The DC of Paramaribo North East,  Jerry Miranda, his personnel and the police repeatedly had to ask the applicants to patiently wait for their turn. When things started to get a bit rough, crush barriers were placed outside the DC’s Office. People were pushing and pulling each other in the hope of advancing faster. “If the particulars are incorrect, one can’t vote”

Starting this Friday the lists of voters will be made available for public perusal in all of the nation’s districts. The perusal period starts on February 13 and ends on March 15. “It is important for every voter (people who are 18 years of age and older  and who have the Surinamese nationality) to check if his or her particulars are on the lists of voters and if the particulars are accurate. CBvS sells about $ 44,000 and € 14,000 at public counter in first week

The Central Bank of Suriname (CBvS) has reportedly sold about $ 44,000 and € 14,000 at its public counter to the ‘common man’ in the first week. The Central Bank has reportedly processed 210 requests for foreign currency. “The first week went by successfully. We received a spontaneous response from the public which proves that there is a huge demand for foreign currency,” said the Central Bank in a press release. More than 1,100 people excluded from right to vote

Paulus Pinas, deputy director at the Justice and Police Ministry’s Offender Care Department, told Times of Suriname that 1,150 inmates who are behind bars at the nation’s penitentiaries are excluded from the right to vote. These people can’t be nominated and they also can’t go the polls. Statistics indicate that 52 inmates will be released before election day, May 25. 3 men arrested over fuel theft

Police officers from the Brokopondo District on Wednesday afternoon arrested three men over the theft of 500 liters of diesel. The police reportedly received a tip that people were busy stealing fuel at a mast of a telecom company along the road to Atjoni. Shorty after the police had received the tip, they arrested the suspects who had already left the scene of the crime.
