Suspected drug dealer caught red-handed

Prison guards on Wednesday confiscated 42 marihuana rolls from an inmate. Government owes RBE more than SRD 3 million

The government reportedly owes Roy Boedhoe Enterprises (RBE) more than SRD 3 million. Reports indicate that the government still has not paid the bills from 2012, 2013 and 2014. The entrepreneur was forced to stop accepting fuel vouchers from the government after the bank put pressure on him about two weeks ago. “For now we will only work with the government if they pay cash. After the bank told me that it would no longer accept my checks, I was forced to take these measures,” said Roy Boedhoe, CEO and owner of  RBE. Official complaint filed against EBS

MP Arthur Tjin A Tsoi (NF/NPS) on Thursday delivered a thick dossier to the Public Prosecutor’s Office (OM). The legislator pointed out that the dossier contains evidence that money has been embezzled at a large scale at the Energy Company Suriname (EBS). Wanica District has biggest group of additional voters

The Wanica District reportedly has experienced a rise in its population making it the district with the most additional voters for the general elections of May 25, 2015. Statistics from the Central Bureau for Civic Affairs (CBB) indicate that Wanica gained more than 12,000 voters during the past couple of years. During the elections of May 2010, Wanica had about 68,000 voters which means that this district currently has about 80,000 voters. BEP members fired from Marowijne DC’s Office

Alwin Lonswijk and  Ilse Lino who are members of the BEP party and who both worked at the Marowijne District Commissioner’s Office were fired on Monday, January 26th, by DC Theodurus Sondrejoe. Belvosur donates € 40,000 to ’s Lands Hospital

Stichting België voor Suriname (Belvosur) on Tuesday donated € 40,000 to the Maternal and Child Care Ward of ’s Lands Hospital. The money will be used to purchase 40 cribs, a reanimation table and a child monitor. “Suriname will also notice alarming increase of new cancer cases”

“The number of cancer cases will increase in the next twenty years if risk factors such as alcohol abuse, sugar consumption and obesity are not tackled,” said Purcy Oliveira, chairman of the Surinamese  Cancer Patients Association  (SKV). The World Cancer Report, produced by the World Health Organization’s specialized cancer agency predicted that new cancer cases would  rise from an estimated 14 million annually in 2012 to 22 million within two decades. Stolen batteries belong to Telesur

The deputy director at the Telecommunications Company Suriname (Telesur), Edmund Neus, told Times of Suriname that at least 28 batteries that were confiscated during the weekend by the police belong to Telesur. The telecom provider has recognized its property. Neus indicated that batteries were stolen from five mobile stations in January. There are usually 24 batteries at each location. Storekeeper guns down contractor

A 50-year-old storekeeper on Monday afternoon shot dead a contractor in his store located along the Gompertsstraat in Geyersvlijt. Police Inspector Ruben Dijks, Chief of Police of Geyersvlijt, confirmed the reports. The suspect was arrested shortly after the deadly shooting. Edgar Ritfeld: “It is becoming hopeless”

“It is becoming hopeless,”Edgar Ritfeld, one of the suspects in the 8 December trial, told Times of Suriname. Ritfeld did not appear in court on Monday and the trial was moved to March 2.
