KPS urges citizens not to keep money and jewels at home

SURINAME – The Police Force Suriname (KPS) recently urged citizens to remain very cautious during the holidays to keep themselves from being targeted by criminals.  Police Commissioner Humphrey Naarden urged citizens not to keep valuable jewels and huge sums of money at home. Naarden explained that just like honest citizens criminals also want money to celebrate the holidays. The honest citizens work hard to earn a little extra but the criminals want the same without having to work up a sweat. US-Suriname Open Skies Agreement Now In Force

Grandmother arrested for assault toddler

Last week the 42-year-old AD was arrested for grievous bodily harm of her four-year-old granddaughter who she raises.  This case took place in the Wanica district. The woman told the police that she was sweeping the floor on that particular day. The woman warned the girl to sit down, but she did not listen. China and Celac to sign strategic alliance

China will sign a strategic alliance with the Community of South American and Caribbean States (Celac) next month. It is an important trade and investment cooperation amounting US$35 billion. Policeman disarmed after traffic accident

SURINAME – A  policeman who had reportedly caused a traffic accident in the Para District has been disarmed.  Roberto Prade, head of the Para Police Department, confirmed the reports. The policeman who was on duty drove from Zanderij to Rijsdijk to pick up a soldier for their joint patrol.  The policeman reportedly rammed a tree at Hannover. Small increase in fireworks permit requests

SURINAME – Officials recently indicated that about 300 requests for selling fireworks have been filed in the Paramaribo District. Last year there were 255 requests. DC Mike Nerkust from Paramaribo South West indicated that close to 150 requests have been filed at his office. Chicken in bathroom leads to closure of supermarket

SURINAME – A female entrepreneur who runs a store in the Commewijne District was ordered to close her doors after she was caught packing up chicken legs in the bathroom. An official from the Environment Health Department (MGD) at the District Commissioner’s Office indicated that four large bags of leg quarters were put on dirty tiles in the bathroom. No support for discussion of Constitutional Court in Parliament

SURINAME – Thursday’s  public session of Parliament did not go through due to a lack of quorum.

Only 23 members of the  coalition were present to discuss several matters  including  the Constitutional Court Bill. The members of the opposition did not sign the attendance list because according to them the Constitutional Court Bill should  not have been placed as the first topic  on the agenda. The legislators from the opposition indicated that they preferred to continue the discussion of the Amendment of the Attorney Act. The legislators from the coalition deemed  this as “a fallacy.”…[+]
