Caricom again urges U.S. to end Cuban embargo

CUBA — Caribbean leaders have assembled in Havana, Cuba for a summit between Cuba and the 15-member Caribbean Community, with issues including trade, investment, and education ties on the agenda, Telesur reported. The fifth Cuba-Caricom Summit, which took place  on Monday, was  preceded on Sunday by a meeting of the region’s foreign ministers. 3 men arrested for assaulting police officers

SURINAME – Three young men were arrested on Friday on multiple charges.  23-year-old  Gilluermo A., 20-year-old  Miquell H. and 20-year-old  Jeorginio V. reportedly assaulted two police officers around 2:15 on December 5. Two police officers arrived on the scene  after the police had received a call from a citizen who reported that students were consuming alcohol. Unasur summit opens new phase towards South American integration

SURINAME / ECUADOR – The Union of South American Nations (Unasur) has opened a new phase in the search for greater regional integration, an objective that many presidents of the bloc agree is the route to increasing well being in their countries. Unasur applauds Suriname’s most important achievement

SURINAME – Encouraging the youth policy and youth participation is deemed Suriname’s most important achievement when it held the presidency of the Union of South American Nations (Unasur). Last week Suriname transferred the presidency of the Unasur  to Uruguay. SURINAME – A fugitive whose name is on the wanted list of the Police Force Suriname (KPS) was arrested on Wednesday. Police units reportedly arrested MB  in  Snesi Kondre. Suriname and Ecuador scrap visa requirement

SURINAME/ ECUADOR – Suriname and  Ecuador on Thursday inked an agreement regarding their collaboration on areas of trade and the exchange of knowledge on the mining sector. Ecuador has managed to ink good deals with multinationals which is why Suriname wants to learn the tricks of this trade from Ecuador. Suriname and Ecuador also inked an agreement aimed at scrapping the visa requirement between both countries. Suriname’s Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Lackin signed the agreements on behalf of Suriname while his Ecuadorian counterpart Ricardo Patiño signed the agreement on behalf of Ecuador. Women dominate judiciary

SURINAME – The judiciary currently has 14 female and 5 male judges. Five substitutes namely Rewita Chatterpal, Daniëlle Karamatali, Marie Mettendaf, Sieglien Wijnhard and  Maytrie Kuldipsingh were sworn in as new members of the Court of Justice on Thursday.  President Desi Bouterse also swore in Jane Jensen, Audrey Nooitmeer-Rotsburg, Ishwarpersdad Sonai, Sabritie Nanhoe and  Sylvana Bradley as the new substitutes. These five people are currently being trained to become judges.  Acting Chief Justice Iwan Rasoelbaks told Times of Suriname that the installation of the new judges will take place on December 30. Kids from Matawai region will finally celebrate Children’s Day

SURINAME – About 300 children from the villages  Pusugrunu and  Nieuw-Jacobkondre which are located in the  Matawai region will celebrate Children’s Day on December 5 for the first time ever. Student robbed of mobile phone

SURINAME – A 15-year-old student was injured and robbed along the Calcuttastraat on Tuesday afternoon. Entrepreneur  Soesil Jankie who witnessed the robbery as he was driving by indicated that he had seen how two boys were robbing the student who was wearing a blue uniform. The perpetrators reportedly pushed the student to the ground in order to take his mobile phone. The perpetrators walked away after they had robbed the student who was injured in his arm and neck.
