Global cocaine production has reached record levels as demand rebounds following Covid lockdowns, a new report has found. The UN Office on Drugs and Crime said coca cultivation rose by 35% between 2020 and 2021 to record levels. Findings suggest new hubs for trafficking have emerged in West and Central Africa. The report also said traffickers were using international postal services more often to get drugs to consumers. “Globally, the use of parcel and courier services increased significantly during the Covid-related lockdown due to restrictions on passenger flights,” the Global Report on Cocaine report said. It noted a rise in West African countries in the use of “well established, globally operating postal services as well as smaller shopping companies” used to smuggle quantities of cocaine to Europe and beyond. Libya uranium: Tonnes gone missing, UN says
Two and a half tonnes of uranium have gone missing from a site in Libya, the UN’s nuclear watchdog has said. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) sounded the alarm after a visit by its inspectors to the undisclosed site earlier this week. They found that 10 drums containing uranium ore had disappeared, the IAEA said.
Inspectors fear the uranium could pose a radiological risk, and also have concerns over nuclear security. The IAEA said that the site where the uranium was stored was not in government-controlled territory. In a statement, the organisation said it would conduct further activities “to clarify the circumstances of the removal of the nuclear material and its current location”. It is unclear when the uranium went missing or who could have taken it. It was removed from a very remote location in southern Libya, where there were “lots of ungoverned areas”, according to Scott Roecker from the Nuclear Threat Initiative, a global security organisation working on nuclear issues.(BBC)…[+]

Wapens en patronen vervoerd wegens financiële nood
PARAMARIBO – Rivellino P verkeerde in financiële nood en koos ervoor om twee wapens en 50 patronen voor een ander te vervoeren. Daarvoor verdiende hij 100 euro, maar de politie nam het geld in beslag. Op 19 januari had hij twee vuistvuurwapens en 50 patronen voor handen. Hij moest de wapens en de patronen vervoeren voor een ander vanuit Paramaribo naar Albina. Bij de controlepost te Stolkertsijver zijn de wapens gevonden. Rivellino P verklaarde dat hij zou worden betaald voor de taxirit om de wapens te vervoeren. Hij vervoert normaliter passagiers, waarvoor hij SRD 200 per persoon ontvangt. Een politieman verklaarde dat een wagen kwam aanrijden vanuit de richting van Paramaribo en gaande in die van Albina. Hij stopte de bestuurder voor een controle en trof twee vuistvuurwapens en patronen aan. De persoon voor wie de wapens en patronen zijn vervoerd, is nog niet achterhaald. Hij is niet aangetroffen op de locatie namelijk een appartement. De verdachte heeft spijt betuigd. Het Openbaar Ministerie eiste twaalf maanden onvoorwaardelijke celstraf. Sociaal werkers willen betrokkenheid vanuit overheid
PARAMARIBO – De Vereniging van Sociaal Werkers in Suriname (V.S.W.S) heeft bij president Chandrikapersad Santokhi aan de bel getrokken. Dit omdat de sociaal werkers betrokken wensen te worden bij het sociaal beleid van de regering. De organisatie heeft dit verzoek op 14 maart 2023 gedeponeerd bij het staatshoofd. Dit is gebeurd tijdens een voorgesprek in het kader van de Nationale Dialoog. Het staatshoofd heeft hiermee ook ingestemd en zal de organisatie in contact brengen met relevante overheidsinstanties, werkgroepen en buurtorganisaties.
V.S.W.S-voorzitter Norville Plet Burleson heeft aangegeven dat de sociaal werkers ruime kennis dragen over de actuele sociaal maatschappelijke situatie in het land. “Vanwege hun expertise zijn zij in staat adequaat in te spelen op vraagstukken”, geeft zij aan. Ook is de vereniging bereid om buurtorganisaties te trainen hoe in te spelen op sociaal- maatschappelijke problemen. De voorzitter heeft tijdens de presentatie benadrukt dat vanwege de crises burgers het enorm moeilijk hebben om te overleven.
