Family camping on cliff edge fined for lockdown breach
A couple found camping “in a perilous position” on top of a cliff have been fined for breaching lockdown rules. The pair were found with a child in a tent 85m (280ft) above the North Yorkshire coast in a spot prone to landslips. Police said the 27-year-old woman and 30-year-old man had travelled from Doncaster and Middlesbrough. Choosing to camp at the site at Port Mulgrave, near Staithes, had put all three lives at risk, officers said.
North Yorkshire Police said it was “completely irresponsible” to pitch the tent so close to the cliffside along the Cleveland Way, a popular coastal walking route. “To travel from Middlesbrough and Doncaster with the intention to camp overnight is obviously a clear breach of the regulations,” officers said. “Not only were the individuals involved risking their own safety and the safety of the child who was with them, if a landslide had occurred, they would also be risking the lives of the emergency services who would attend the resulting incident.”(BBC)…[+]

As the Love Island reality TV franchise launches in South Africa, the show has come under fire from viewers who say it fails to reflect the racial make-up of the majority-black nation. South African media say just two contestants are black, and two are coloured – the official term for mixed-race people in the country. The other six housemates are white. In all, 10 contestants are vying to win the series and take home 1 million rand ($66,200; £47,500). A spokesman said more contestants would be arriving in the next few days who would reflect South Africa’s diversity. Heathrow Airport seven-hour queues ‘inhumane’, say passengers
Passengers have complained of queues of up to seven hours long at Heathrow Airport’s border control. One passenger described a mother having to feed her baby on the floor, saying conditions were “not humane”. A union for border control workers said Covid security measures designed to reduce infections was leading to inadequate staffing. Heathrow Airport said the government needed to make sure there were enough staff to cope with demand. Alicia, 26, who did not want her surname used, was flying back from Vienna after attending a medical appointment for her leg. She told the BBC she began queuing to go through border control at 18:30 on Sunday evening, but did not get through until 01:30 on Monday.
“I felt really unsafe,” she said. “It was really disorganised. One mother had to feed her baby on the floor. It’s not humane.” Alicia added: “The staff didn’t offer any chairs, there was no social distancing. Iran nuclear deal: Tehran rules out informal talks on reviving accord
Iran has ruled out holding an informal meeting with the US and European powers on ways to revive a nuclear deal, insisting that America must lift all of its unilateral sanctions first. Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman said it was not an appropriate time for the talks proposed by the European Union. The US said it was disappointed but that it remained ready to “re-engage in meaningful diplomacy” on the issue.
Tensions have soared since the US left a nuclear deal with Iran in 2018. Then-President Donald Trump re-imposed crippling economic sanctions to force Iran to renegotiate the 2015 accord, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). Iran refused and retaliated by rolling back a number of key commitments. The US has now expressed intent to rejoin the deal under President Joe Biden. Denver family wows neighbourhood with snow art
For most people, creating a snowman is hard work, but one family in Colorado took things to another level with this snake snow sculpture. Morn Mosley and his five siblings spent ten hours working on this year’s model of a snake which has delighted locals. The family’s work gained popularity in 2019 after their tiger sculpture was widely shared on local media. The snake measures some 77 feet (23 metres) long and is in the front garden of his mother’s house. Video footage shared on social media by Mr Mosley shows the effort the group went to to create the snake. The group created the shape of the animal before using spray paint to add colour and shading. “My dad would make them with us when we were younger,” he told the BBC. “We just try to have fun every now and then and create one for old times sake.”(BBC)…[+]
Myanmar coup: Deadliest day of protests as police open fire
Police have fired on protesters in Myanmar killing at least 18, the UN human rights office says, on the deadliest day of anti-coup rallies. Deaths were reported in several cities including Yangon, Dawei and Mandalay as police used live rounds and tear gas. Security forces began the violent crackdown on Saturday, after weeks of largely peaceful protests against the 1 February military takeover. Government leaders, including Aung San Suu Kyi, were overthrown and detained. Social media footage from Sunday showed protesters running away as police charged at them, makeshift roadblocks being erected, and several people being led away covered in blood.

Indiase man gedood door eigen haan bij hanengevecht
Een haan die in India gebruikt werd voor hanengevechten, heeft zijn eigenaar bij zo’n gevecht dodelijk verwond. Het dier was uitgerust met een mes en verwondde de man aan zijn kruis toen die probeerde te voorkomen dat de haan ontsnapte. De man verloor veel bloed en overleed onderweg naar een ziekenhuis, liet een lokale politieagent uit de staat Telangana weten, waar het bizarre ongeval plaatsvond. De haan in kwestie werd even vastgehouden op het politiebureau, maar is later naar een kippenboerderij gebracht. Het slachtoffer had met nog vijftien andere mannen het hanengevecht georganiseerd in het dorp Lothunur. De lokale politie is op zoek naar de rest van de groep. New Yorkse gouverneur Cuomo twee keer beschuldigd van seksuele intimidatie
Andrew Cuomo, de gouverneur van de staat New York, is door twee vrouwen beschuldigd van seksueel ongewenst gedrag. Een 25-jarige vrouw komt zaterdag met een beschuldiging in de New York Times. Afgelopen woensdag deed een andere vrouw al haar verhaal over misdragingen van Cuomo. Beide vrouwen werkten voor de gouverneur. Een van hen, de 25-jarige Charlotte Bennett, vertelt in de New York Times dat ze afgelopen najaar allerlei seksueel getinte en persoonlijke vragen kreeg van haar baas. Zo vroeg hij haar of ze dacht dat leeftijd een verschil maakte in relaties, en had hij gezegd dat hij openstond voor relaties met vrouwen van in de 20. Amerikaanse medicijnwaakhond FDA keurt Janssen-coronavaccin goed
De Amerikaanse medicijnwaakhond (FDA) adviseert het coronavaccin van de Leidse farmaceut Janssen toe te laten op de Amerikaanse markt. Het middel kan nu snel worden ingezet om miljoenen mensen in te enten. Eerder had de FDA het middel al veilig genoemd en voor ongeveer 72 procent effectief. Daarmee stond niets een versnelde goedkeuring meer in de weg. Johnson & Johnson (J&J), de Amerikaanse eigenaar van Janssen, is meteen na het besluit begonnen met de distributie van de vaccins in de VS. Janssen kan direct 4 miljoen doses leveren aan de Amerikanen. Eind maart moeten er volgens J&J 20 miljoen doses over heel de Verenigde Staten zijn toegediend en voor eind juni van dit jaar is het streefgetal 100 miljoen toegediende vaccins.
